Bamboo Fly Rod Information
I have scheduled 3 separate rod building sessions in the meeting room at Good Times Pizza in Palo Cedro. I anticipate each session will take most of each day.
*Prior to those meetings, you will each need to acquire a few items for the rod building session. I'll have already purchased all the necessary epoxy, varnish, rod finish, an alcohol lamp, etc. To make things simple, we'll all share those materials by having everyone chip in $5.
*However, in addition, each of you will need to bring the following to the sessions:
- A good measuring tape
- A good soft lead pencil.
- Single edge razor blades
- Two new emery boards used for manicures. Medium and fine textures are preferred. These will be used for fitting the ferrules.
- A thread burnisher...this is a small plastic tool used to rub the thread on the wrappings.
- The wrapping thread for your rod...in the color you choose (remember your rod blanks are a "honey color")
The typical bamboo rod uses silk thread for the wrappings...but you may use other types of thread if you prefer. A good silk thread can be ordered from J. Stockard Fly Fishing [jsflyfishing.com]. I suggest Naples silk thread # OR-098010. It is available in a variety of colors at less than $4 per spool. To be safe, I suggest you order 2 spools.
Stockard also has a rod wrapping 3 tool pack [ # OR-095075] which includes a burnisher and 2 other tools for about $5...but you can find burnishers for about $2 (or less) on other sites.
